The edges of the creased covers are chipped and stained, with a few tiny tears. There is an annotation in black ink on the front cover and a number penned in blue at the top. The spine has largely perished. 54 pages, illustrated with 21 figures within the text. The edges of the pages are slightly darkened and creased, with occasional stains. The rear cover and last leaf are nearly detached. First edition in German of the French mathematician Poinsot's "New Theory of Body Rotation" translated into German by K.H. Schellbach. The French Mathematician and physicist Louis Poinsot (1777-1859) was the inventor of geometrical mechanics. Starting his career as a civil engineer, Poinsot developed a true passion for abstract mathematics and left to become a secondary school teacher. He moved up to become inspector general of the Imperial University of France and then as an assistant teacher at the Ecole Polytechnique, publishing several works on geometry and mechanics. Poinsot was elected to fill the place of the late Joseph-Louis Lagrange at the Academie des Sciences in 1813. In 1848, Poinsot was awarded as an Officer of the Legion of Honor, and in 1852 was chosen as a member of the Senate. He was later elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1858. Fair .
